Steven Schiff - The Political Roswell Hunter
Steven Schiff Roswell search represented one of two great efforts made during the 1990s to get to the bottom of the Roswell crash. In 1994 Schiff convinced the government's General Accounting Office to take on the case after being told by the National Archives they had no records. Schiff was a member of the House Government Operations Committee, which oversaw the GOA.
"I was getting pretty upset at all the running around," Schiff told the Santa Fe New Mexican, adding that at his meeting with the GOA, " they had offered to help."
"Generally, I'm a skeptic on UFOs and alien beings, but there are indications from the runaround that I got whatever it was, it wasn't a balloon. Apparently, it's another government cover-up," Schiff said.
"I think, first of all, it could be a weather balloon," he told the Albuquerque Journal. Because of the government's obvious disinterest in giving me the information, that leads me to think it might've been something else. If I had to guess, I would say some kind of military experiment, but that's sheerly a guess."
Schiff began his search for the Roswell answer in march 1993 when he wrote then Defense Secretary Les Aspin seeking a "definitive explanation of what transpired and why."
The Schiff Roswell effort led to this Albuquerque newspaper cartoon.
The second major effort was made by Laurance Rockefeller who tried to get to President Bill Clinton to get him to release all the government UFO files. In meeting with Clinton's science advisor Dr. Jack Gibbons, Gibbons made it clear to Rockefeller that trying to get everything released would be a mammoth task, and that perhaps an effort should be made just to get disclosure on one case.
Rockefeller quickly agreed, and chose the Roswell case as the case to go after. This Gibbons Rockefeller compromise led to the USAF reinvestigation of the Roswell case that took place in the mid nineties.
Both the USAF and GOA investigations turned up nothing, and were viewed by many researchers as just the latest government whitewashes.
Now a new Schiff letter has surfaced which adds to the history of his effort to get the Roswell answer. The 1994 letter to Robert Barrow reinforces the view that Schiff was trying to get to the bottom of the Roswell mystery.
